Free of charge examinations ahead of MMA Day

28. 02. 2020

The Military Healthcare Department, in cooperation with the Military Medical Academy, on the eve of March 2 - MMA Day, organized a traditional action of free of charge specialist examinations.
All interested citizens, regardless of health insurance, had the opportunity to carry out preventive examinations from three branches of medicine in order to detect early malignancy of the breast, malignant tumors of the skin, as well as to determine bone density.
According to Lt. Col. Dr. Dejan Jovanovic of the MMA Institute of Radiology, the largest number of patients was screened for the first time on a mammogram - the gold standard in breast cancer prevention. As he pointed out, regular examination of patients usually involves ultrasound examinations, while a mammogram is usually recommended if it is suspected for some changes. One patient's examination today revealed a suspected malignancy, which is confirmed by the statistics that about in ten examinations a change that requires further examination is found.
Nada Milnovic (1966) from Belgrade was among the patients who scheduled a mammogram examination yesterday morning. According to her, she is very satisfied with the service and screening provided at the MMA, which she says has a lot of confidence in and is trying to do as a civilian insured a large number of examinations at this military healthcare institution.
The MMA rheumatologists also participated in the free of charge examinations with an osteodensitometer, which accurately determines the degree of bone density and determines osteopenia and osteoporosis. This examination is recommended for women after 65 years of age, but also for existing risk factors such as genetic predisposition, diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis, some kidney diseases and more. Approximately 30 percent of patients underwent examination for a higher degree of osteoporosis and were given guidelines for further treatment.
With a traditional anniversary campaign, examinations for 90 citizens were planned, out of which most of them for dermatologists. Head of the Clinic for Skin and Sexual Diseases MMA Prof. Dr. Lidija Kandolf Sekulovic pointed out that two patients were diagnosed with suspicious changes and were referred for further treatment. In order to continually point to the timely detection of melanoma, she reminded citizens that preventive examinations of moles are available throughout the year.
