Tumor weighing 18 kg successfully removed

05. 07. 2018

A complex surgical procedure for the removal of liposarcoma - a rare type of tumor of large size was successfully performed in the Military Medical Academy, owing to the multidisciplinary treatment approach. The patient's (51-year-old) condition was stable and was discharged from the hospital for further home treatment.
This type of malignancy occurs in a small number of cases accompanied by the various symptoms of the disease. In the case of a patient in the MMA, a tumor process of 50 cm in diameter and about 18 kg in weight was localized in the abdomen. Although liposarcoma surgery is considered the most effective way of treatment, a presence of large blood vessels and abdominal organs additionally complicated this risky surgical removal procedure of such size of tumor.
After the gastroenterological diagnosis done by Lt Col Assistant Professor Nebojsa Manojlovic from the Clinic for Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the MMA and consultative decision on surgical treatment, surgery was performed by Prof. Dr. Bratislav Trifunovic, Assistant Professor Dr. Bosko Milev, Lt Col Assist. Dr. Milan Jovanovic and Zivorad Kocevski, anesthesiologist Dr. Aleksandara Ristanovic and OR nurses Marijana Bugarcic and Jasmina Mitrovic.
