Professor Balint Elected a Corresponding Member of SASA

Head of the Institute of Transfusiology and Hemobiology of the Military Medical Academy, Professor Dr. Bela Balint was elected a corresponding member of the Department of Medical Sciences of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts at the election assembly held on November 5, 2015. At the regular assembly meeting of SASA 35 new members were elected, 15 regular, 14 corresponding and six foreign members.
Professor Balint, a specialist in transfusiology and a subspecialist in hematology, was born in 1952 and graduated from the Medical Faculty of the University of Novi Sad in 1978. Since 2005, he holds the title of a professor, scientific advisor and has been the Head of the Institute of Transfusiology and Hemobiology of MMA from 2010.
He was the first in the world who introduced innovative therapeutic apheresis: selective plasma exchange with extracorporeal immunoadsorption for kidney transplantation and multi-modal apheresis for hemobiologic disorders.
He is a visiting professor at medical faculties in Belgrade, Nis, Novi Sad and the European School of Transfusion Medicine in Milan, Italy. He has been a member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the Serbian Medical Society (SMS) since 2002.
He has published 812 scientific papers, sci ratio is 909, the cumulative publication impact factor of 84.19, and Prof. Balint is an author or co-author of 19 monographs. His works were cited 164 times (UBSM) or 349 times (RGC).
He is an editor and reviewer of "Journal of Hematology, Blood Transfusion and Disorders", "International Journal of Clinical Transfusion Medicine," "Blood Banking Transfusion Medicine", "The Lancet", "Medical Science Monitor," "World Journal of Pediatrics" "Serbian Archives of Medicine", "Vojnosanitetski pregled", "Transfusiology Bulletin," "Anesthesia, Resuscitation, Transfusion" and "Medical Review".
He is a leading expert or a member of a large number of scientific research projects, a founder of the Center for stem cell transplantation and the Center for Regenerative Medicine of the Military Medical Academy. He is also a founder and president of the National Interdisciplinary Association for Apheresis Treatment.
He was awarded the SMS Charter, Cvijic Medal, and Gold Medal by the decree of the President of Serbia, won the first prize for the best scientific research paper of the SMS and for the best scientific research project of the Serbian Armed Forces.
