"Medicine" Edition Releases at the Belgrade Book Fair

24. 10. 2024

Today, at the 67th International Belgrade Book Fair, new editions of the "Medicine" edition were promoted as part of the "Defense Media Center" promotional program.
With the expert guidance of Mirjana Sandić, editor of the "Military Book" Editorial Department of the "Defense" Media Center, the interested public was presented with educational and scientific content for the needs of military education, as well as the book "Medicinal Herbs in the Service of Health", signed by Prof. Dr. Vesna Kilibarda, Prof. Dr. Silvija Dobrić, and Dr. Vanja Tadić.
The author's preface to the book "Medicinal Plants in the Service of Health" confirms the global need to use the fruits of nature for medical care and treatment, but also the contemporary trend that society, due to fatigue and inability to use synthetic drugs, is returning to phytotherapy. The book is thematically divided into a general and special part, on the history, development, and legal procedure, on the one hand, and information on medicinal plants and preparations, on the other. Reviewer Dr. Sofija Đorđević believes that this edition represents a review of the latest data in the phytotherapy field, carried out per the recommendations of international health organizations. Mirjana Sandić said that the name of Vaso Pelagić was among the first who wrote about treatment with medicinal plants, in the mid-19th century, and that his interest in this branch of medicine, in the 20th century, was continued by Prof. Dr. Academician Jovan Tucakov with his work. Summing up the basic message of this book, she concluded that the book "Medicinal Plants in the Service of Health" is one of the first publications in our century worthy of continuing the path of great works.
Author Dr. Vesna Kilibarda, professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Military Medical Academy, outlined the qualities that set this publication apart from others:
"It is how we presented these plants, or rather the medicinal plant raw materials that have been used and are most often used. We did not adhere to folk traditions and beliefs, but rather relied on the monographs provided by the European Medicines Agency and what has been confirmed by clinical studies," explained Dr. Kilibarda, adding that 180 plants were described, which were registered either as herbal medicines or as traditional herbal medicines.
The second signed author, Prof. Dr. Silvija Dobrić revealed that the origin of this monograph lies in the textbook that professors of the Faculty of Medicine of the Military Medical Academy used to teach undergraduate students, within the elective course "Phytotherapy." Vanja Tadić, on behalf of the Institute for the Study of Medicinal Plants "Dr. Josif Pančić", said that the book lists many herbal drugs, which, although traditionally used, do not have official monographs. She pointed out that all these plants were mentioned because they were found in tea blends within the production program of the Institute for the Study of Medicinal Plants, with a confirmed and traditional, safe use.
The manuals for the needs of the Faculty of Medicine of the Military Medical Academy of the University of Defence, "Otorhinolaryngology with Maxillofacial Surgery", "Practical Course in Urology", "Atlas of Thromboembolic Pulmonary Disease" and "Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS)", intended primarily for students in basic and specialist medical studies, were promoted in a conversation that editor Mirjana Sandić led with the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the Military Medical Academy, Prof. Dr. Sonja Marjanović, Colonel Prof. Dr. Milanko Milojević, Colonel Prof. Dr. Nebojša Marić, Colonel Prof. Dr. Zoran Jović, as well as Prof. Dr. Vladimir Bančević.
The monograph "The Faculty of Medicine of the Military Medical Academy of the University of Defense—the first 15 years" presents a unique analysis of the development and activities of this highly specialized institution, which has become recognized in the defense system by educating cadets for officer and medical careers.
The dean of this institution, Prof. Dr. Sonja Marjanović, wrote in the introduction to the publication that the establishment and development of the Faculty of Medicine of the Military Medical Academy of the University of Defense cannot be separated from the Military Medical Academy and that the education of medical personnel has been underway since the establishment of the first Central Military Hospital.
Colonel Dr. Milanko Milojević, Head of the ENT Clinic of the Military Medical Academy and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Military Medical Academy, expressed hope for good reception of the textbook "Otorhinolaryngology with Maxillofacial Surgery" and stated that is primarily intended for medical students at the Faculty of Medicine of the Military Medical Academy of the University of Defense, but also all other students of medical faculties in the Republic of Serbia because it represents a good basis for training in this field.
Thanking for the invitation to participate in this promotion, Colonel Prof. Dr. Zoran Jović, Head of the Cardiology Clinic of the Military Medical Academy, said that the "Atlas of Thromboembolic Pulmonary Disease" is a unique publication not only in our region but also in the world, since 31 of the most severe patients with acute and chronic forms of thromboembolic pulmonary disease were successfully treated at the Military Medical Academy.
Professor Dr. Vladimir Bančević, Head of the Second Department of the Urology Clinic of the Military Medical Academy, expressed his honor at having the opportunity to speak in front of a large audience, but also that he had previously collaborated with the Editorial Board of the "Military Book" of the "Odbrana" Media Center. He stated that in the "Practical Course in Urology," he tried to enable students to more easily and quickly, in a modern way, master the thematic content that awaits them in their work at general practice clinics. Colonel Dr. Nebojša Marić, Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Military Medical Academy and Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery of the Clinic of Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery of the Military Medical Academy, emphasized that it is a privilege to perform video-assisted thoracic surgery in our country, especially in an institution such as the Military Medical Academy. He added that from a surgical perspective, it is challenging to sublimate the collected material into a narrow form, but he believes that he has provided readers with concrete and practical advice in this area.
