MMA’s Contribution to the Committee on Bioethics of the Council of Europe

Representing the Republic of Serbia on the 2nd meeting of the Committee on Bioethics (DH-BIO), Council of Europe (CE) held in Strasbourg, France on December 2012, Prof. Dr. Zvonko Magic, head of the Institute of Medical Research of the Military Medical Academy, has been elected for the DH-BIO Bureau member.
47 state members of the Council of Europe are involved in the work of the Committee. It is managed by the president, deputy president and 4 Bureau members selected among several candidates.
Committee on Bioethics is primary responsible for problems in the field of bioethics which are disputed and then regulated through the recommendations, guides or legal acts adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. The most important contribution of DH-BIO so far is writing and adoption of Bioethics Convention in 1997 (known also as the Oviedo Convention) which has been signed so far by 30 countries, members of the CE, including also Serbia. Principal topics the DH-BIO deals with include the following: ethical aspects of human genetic testing, biomedical research, neuroimaging, treatment of the mentally disabled persons, the end of life situations, ethical committees in healthcare facilities, etc.
