Lecture on Cause of Parkinson's Disease
12. 09. 2016
A lecture of Marija Mucibabic, a doctoral candidate of the Institute of Physics of the University of Leiden, The Netherlands, on protein aggregation in early stages of Parkinson's disease, organized by the MMA Clinic for Neurology, was held at the Military Medical Academy.
The results of five year research on the origin of causes and the understanding of the molecular mechanism of the disease were presented that until recently was considered to affect middle-aged and elderly people. However, according to the latest research even people who turned 35 could be affected. Also, the protein morphology of alphasinuclein was presented being the first step towards detecting the Parkinson's disease important for early diagnosis and defining the treatment perspective.
Head of Functional neurological diagnostics MMA Lt. Col. Prof. Dr. Tihomir Ilić thanked for the excellent presentation and pointed out that next year would be two centuries since the discovery of the disease, which symptoms about 6.3 million people worldwide feel. He concluded that with technological modernization and the close cooperation between experts in particular in the field of biomedical engineering, one can expect progress in discovering the causes and further development of immune therapy for this neurodegenerative disease.
